With national Marine Spatial Planning (MSP) initiatives being implemented in about 40 countries around the world in the past 12 years, it is expedient that monitoring and evaluation are integrated into each stage of the ocean planning process and not only considered after plans have been developed. This new guide therefore serves to assist ocean planners and managers to establish steps towards monitoring and evaluating the performance of marine spatial plans, and ultimately to define and measure “how successful” a given MSP process is. The guide is complemented with a new website (http://openchannels.org/msp-eval-guide) that shows brief interviews with ten MSP professionals from all over the world summarizing their practical experiences with monitoring and evaluation. The website was produced by the IOC in partnership with the OpenChannels Forum for Ocean Planning and Management and Green Fire Productions. Financial support for development of both the guide and the website was provided by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. Hard copies of the guide are being dispatched by mail to IOC national focal points.
