Ocean Experts - Organization

While its benefits are clear, integrated coastal management (ICM) can be a complex and time-consuming endeavor, requiring sufficient expertise and resources. By definition, no single organization, agency or institution can achieve success without the support and collaboration of other stakeholders. This includes experts with knowledge, experience and funding focus on specific aspects of coastal governance, including science, policy, management practice and finance, among others. Local governments and others can benefit immensely from utilizing NGOs, consultants, research organizations, development programs and others to support and accelerate their ICM programs.

This e-Directory includes a catalogue of organizations that have been identified as offering expertise, services and/or funding that could help support ICM programs in the region. Inclusion in the catalogue does not imply endorsement of an organization.

If you are an organization with ICM expertise or funding mandate—including pollution reduction and waste management; food security and livelihood management; water use and supply management; habitat protection, restoration and management; and natural and man-made hazard prevention and management—and you would like to be discovered by programs in East Asia, you may submit your information for consideration for inclusion in e-Directory.

  • SGP recognizes that environmental degradation such as the destruction of ecosystems and the species that depend upon them, increasing levels of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases in our atmosphere, pollution of international waters, land degradation and the spread of persistent organic pollutants are life-threatening challenges that endanger us all. However, poor and vulnerable communities - SGP's primary stakeholders - are most at risk because they depend on access to natural resources for their livelihoods and often live in fragile ecosystems.

    The programme provides grants of up to $50,000 directly to local communities including indigenous people, community-based organizations and other non-governmental groups for projects in Biodiversity, Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation, Land Degradation and Sustainable Forest Management, International Waters and Chemicals.
     

  • The LDCF is a multilateral fund under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) administered by the Global Environmental Facility (GEF). The fund was established in 2001 to address the special needs of the 49 Least Developed Country Parties (LDCs) which are especially vulnerable to the adverse impacts of climate change. The fund became operational in 2002. The fund assists LDCs to carry out the preparation and implementation of national adaptation programs of action (NAPAs). In the course of preparing NAPAs, the LDCs identify priority activities that respond to their urgent and immediate needs with regard to adaptation to climate change. The LDCF is to fund only additional costs for immediate adaptation needs over a development (“business-as-usual”) baseline.
     

  • The SCCF is a multilateral fund under UNFCCC administered by the Global Environmental Facility (GEF). The fund was established with four financing windows, two of which are active: Adaptation and Technology transfer. Adaptation is the Fund’s top priority. SCCF supports activities which are country-driven, cost-effective, and integrated into national sustainable development and poverty reduction strategies; and which take into account national communications or NAPAs and other relevant studies and information provided by the Party. The fund was established in 2001 and became operational in 2002.
     

  • Established in 2006, the Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery (GFDRR) is a partnership of 35 countries and six international organizations committed to helping developing countries reduce their vulnerability to natural hazards and adapt to climate change. The partnership’s mission is to mainstream disaster risk reduction (DDR) and climate change adaptation in country development strategies by supporting a country-led and country-managed implementation of the Hyogo Framework for Action (HFA). Donors join GFDRR in its cooperative mission to help developing countries reduce their vulnerability to natural hazards and adapt to climate change. Since its inception in September 2006 through November 2010, GFDRR has received $244 million in pledges and contributions from its donors.

  • The Global Ocean Biodiversity Initiative is an international partnership advancing the scientific basis for conserving biological diversity in the deep seas and open oceans. It aims to help countries, as well as regional and global organisations, to use and develop data, tools, and methodologies to identify ecologically significant areas in the oceans, with an initial focus on areas beyond national jurisdiction.
