The University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV) is one of the constituent units of the UP System. It has campuses in Miagao, Iloilo and Iloilo City — with Miagao being the main campus where the central administration offices are located.

UPV’s strategic location has given it the enviable status of being the University with the most far-reaching influence in two regions – Region 6 and 7. UPV has three colleges and two schools. These are the College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (CFOS), the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), the College of Management (CM), the School of Technology (SoTech), and the Graduate School (GS).

The university has academic programs envisioned to maintain the its standard of academic excellence. UPV offers courses in the following areas: fisheries, communication and media studies, political science, history, literature, psychology, sociology, community development, mathematics, sciences, economics, accountancy, management, marketing, food technology and chemical engineering.

UP Visayas aims to develop excellence and leadership in the field of fisheries and marine sciences, thus making it the center of fisheries education, research, and extension in the country. It also aims to contribute to the development of the region through relevant instruction, research, and extension programs. Faculty and research staff have implemented research projects in different disciplines with funding support from national agencies implemented by various colleges and units. It also packages training. Some of these are in aquaculture, fish processing technology, marine fisheries, aquatic biology, social sciences, arts and culture and costal resource management.

UPV hosts the regional research center (RRC). This facility have sections for microbiology, biochemistry, biotechnology, instrumentation, software development, among others; and it seeks to address a perennial lack of facilities that limit the potentials of UPV’s researchers. Although RRC shall mainly be used to support the research activities of UPV faculty members, researchers, and students, it shall also be managed as a service laboratory to cater mainly to the needs of researchers in the Visayas and Mindanao regions.
