This report is designed to assist environmental managers, policymakers, and other responsible parties within the new offshore renewable energy (ORE) industry to develop and implement effective processes to manage the spread of invasive aquatic species (IAS) associated with biofouling. The transport of invasive species poses a major threat to marine biodiversity, with maritime activities, particularly biofouling on vessel hulls, acting as a key vector. Invasive species can cause environmental, economic, and social damage, and this issue is often overlooked in Marine Protected Area (MPA) management. Some MPAs, like those in the Galapagos, New Zealand, and Hawaii, enforce strict biofouling controls, but eradication of invasive species is challenging once they are established. Preventing biofouling through early detection and monitoring is crucial.

This report makes specific recommendations for practical presentation and management of marine biofouling for all types of recreational craft, highlighting key areas and equipment that need to be considered. Guidance has been tailored to different types of vessels and uses, including trailered craft, local or estuary cruising vessels and long-distance cruising. In addition, there are recommendations for marinas and port-based management of biofouling.

The biofouling of submerged surfaces and its role in spreading non-indigenous species (NIS) have drawn attention due to their economic, social, and environmental impacts.

This review by GESAMP WG 44 explores strategies for preventing and managing biofouling, highlighting the limitations and effectiveness of current measures. While biofouling is primarily addressed to prevent damage to structures, its role as a vector for invasive species is often secondary.

This Gender Diversity in Biofouling report aims to explore the spread of gender diversity within the maritime sector, with a particular focus on the domain of biofouling. The maritime sector, encompassing shipping, logistics, offshore exploration, and marine research, plays a vital role in global trade and economic development. However, achieving gender diversity and inclusivity within this industry has been a persistent challenge.

The GIA Task Force has commissioned this report to identify existing and impending biofouling regulations and standards. The aim of the report is to provide higher clarity to the industry, with a view to facilitate compliance.
